 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

‘For the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.” Luke 16:8

Parables form roughly one-third of Jesus’ teaching. Every one of them is an invitation to go beyond the surface to wrestle with the meaning; certainly the case with the parable today! What could Jesus be telling us by commending the behavior of a dishonest steward? As disciples of Jesus, we are supposed to be conscientious, prudent, and diligent; yet, there is something in the steward’s creativity, tenacity, and proactiveness that we are to emulate as well. Our Christian commissioning is to use every tool at our disposal and all gifts the Lord has provided us to work for His Kingdom. We are to ask ourselves two essential questions: what does the Father’s heart want most, and how do we use the things of this world to accomplish that? Rather than “serve mammon” - something we want to always be on guard from doing - we are to strive to put “mammon” at the service of God. Jesus tells us: “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves” (Mt 10:16). Let us listen to His words and be trustworthy with all that He has given to us. 

1. Is there a way the Lord desires you to be more creative or prudent in working in the world for His kingdom?

2. Is there any area of your life where there is a temptation to “serve mammon” instead of using “mammon” to serve God?

3. Are there other insights or things the Lord might be saying to you through this parable?

Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

Primera Lectura- Am 8, 4-7 | Salmo Responsorial - Salmo 112, 1-2. 4-6. 7-8 | Segunda Lectura - 1 Tm 2, 1-8 | Evangelio - Lc 16, 1-13

“Pues los que pertenecen a este mundo son más hábiles en sus negocios, que los que pertenecen a la luz.” Lucas 16, 8

Las parábolas constituyen aproximadamente una tercera parte de las enseñanzas de Jesús. Cada una de ellas es una invitación a ir más allá de lo superficial para reflexionar sobre su significado; ciertamente es el caso de la parábola de hoy. ¿Qué nos podría estar diciendo Jesús al elogiar el comportamiento del administrador deshonesto? Como discípulos de Jesús, se supone que debemos ser conscientes, prudentes y diligentes; sin embargo, hay algo en la creatividad, la tenacidad y la iniciativa del administrador que también debemos emular. Nuestro compromiso cristiano es utilizar todas las herramientas a nuestra disposición y todos los dones que el Señor nos ha dado para trabajar para Su Reino. Debemos hacernos dos preguntas esenciales: ¿qué es lo que más desea el corazón del Padre? y ¿cómo podemos utilizar las cosas de este mundo para lograrlo? En lugar de "servir al dinero" -algo que debemos evitar siempre-, debemos esforzarnos por poner el dinero al servicio de Dios. Jesús nos dice: "Yo los envío como a ovejas en medio de lobos: sean entonces astutos como serpientes y sencillos como palomas" (Mt 10,16). Prestemos atención a sus palabras y seamos responsables con todo lo que nos ha dado.

1. ¿Hay alguna manera en la que el Señor desea que seas más creativo o prudente al trabajar en el mundo para Su reino?

2. ¿Hay algún aspecto de tu vida en el que existe la tentación de "servir al dinero" en lugar de utilizarlo para servir a Dios?

3. ¿Hay otras ideas o cosas que el Señor te pueda estar diciendo a través de esta parábola?
