In the early hours of the morning, April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank beneath the waves. According to some reports, there was no panic on board after first hitting the iceberg; passengers remained completely unconcerned as the band on board continued to play. Some did not want to get out of bed. Certainty of the unsinkable reputation of the ship led others to ignore the calls to get into the lifeboats. In many similar ways, our culture today dismisses the loving warnings of the Church, content to disregard truth and continue the path driven by feelings certain of the creed “you do you”.
Disciples of Jesus are often afraid to call people to wake up even while the boat continues to sink. Sharing the moral teachings of Jesus Christ - even when lovingly presented - often results in being labeled judgmental. Speaking about the demands of the Gospel may cost friendships and family relationships. While Jesus prayed at the Last Supper that we would "all be one" (Jn 17:21), this does not mean we are to feign unity. Rejection was common for Jesus. He often expresses to His followers that they, in imitation of His example, will inevitably face rejection similarly.
Many Church teachings today are considered “divisive”, but they heal and save. We need clarity in our lived faith and confidence in how we answer when people ask us about what we believe. Our love for others should drive us to share the saving message of Jesus Christ with them. The Titanic of our culture has already hit the iceberg. Jesus is the life raft. Let us be unafraid to call people to salvation through Him.

En la madrugada del 15 de abril de 1912, se hundió el Titanic. Según algunos informes, no hubo pánico a bordo después de chocar con el iceberg; los pasajeros permanecieron completamente despreocupados mientras los músicos seguían tocando. Algunos no querían salir de su cama. La certeza sobre la reputación del barco insumergible llevó a otros a ignorar las indicaciones para subir a los botes salvavidas. Del mismo modo, nuestra cultura actual descarta la advertencia amorosa de la Iglesia, ignorando la verdad y continuando el camino impulsado por los sentimientos y el relativismo de “cada quien”
A menudo, los discípulos de Jesús tienen miedo de llamar a la gente a despertar, incluso mientras el barco sigue hundiéndose. Compartir las enseñanzas morales de Jesucristo -incluso cuando se presentan con amor- a menudo resulta en ser etiquetado como prejuicioso. Hablar sobre las exigencias del Evangelio puede costarnos amistades y relaciones familiares. Aunque Jesús rezó en la Última Cena para que "todos sean uno" (Jn 17:21), esto no significa que debamos pretender estar unidos. El rechazo era frecuente para Jesús. A menudo expresó a sus seguidores que ellos, imitando su ejemplo, inevitablemente se enfrentarán a un rechazo similar.
Hoy en día, muchas enseñanzas de la Iglesia se consideran "divisivas", pero sanan y salvan. Necesitamos claridad en nuestra fe vivida y confianza en la manera en que respondemos cuando la gente nos pregunta sobre lo que creemos. Nuestro amor por los demás debería impulsarnos a compartir el mensaje salvador de Jesucristo con ellos. El Titanic de nuestra cultura ya ha chocado con el iceberg. Jesús es el bote salvavidas. No tengamos miedo de llamar a la gente a la salvación a través de Él.
