Lent is a special time in the Catholic Church when we focus on prayer, fasting, and giving to others as we prepare for Easter. It lasts 40 days, starting on Ash Wednesday, and reminds us of the time Jesus spent in the desert. It’s a chance to grow closer to God, make sacrifices, and reflect on what really matters in our faith. Whether it’s giving something up or doing more good, Lent is all about renewal and drawing closer to Christ.

Let’s walk through Lent together!

Join us on Ash Wednesday. We receive ashes as a sign of repentance and renewal, reminding us to turn our hearts to God. From 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, ashes will be available for individual distribution in the Chapel for those not able to attend any of the posted Mass times.

Prayer

We pray to turn our hearts and minds toward God. It's not that God needs to know our needs, but that we need to remember that only Jesus saves. Prayer helps us stay humble and open to God's help, and it creates space to hear His voice in the quiet of our hearts, just like the "gentle wind" that spoke to Elijah (1 Kings 19:10-12).

  • Ways to Grow in Prayer:

    • Read the Bible: Start with the Gospels to get to know Jesus.

    • Listen to the Bible in the Year Podcast: Stay connected to God's Word daily.

    • Try different ways to pray: Explore Visio Divina, Lectio Divina, and imaginative prayer.

    • Add 10 minutes of prayer: Even a little more time can make a difference.

    • Visit the Adoration Chapel: It's open 24/7 at St. Ann’s for quiet time with God.

    • Try a Scriptural Rosary: Reflect on the Bible as you pray.

    • Say the Litany of Humility: A prayer to help you grow in humility.

    • Join the Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3pm: A re-occurring virtual event. Click here for zoom link.

Fasting

Fasting invites us to pause and reflect, diving deeper into our hearts to understand what we truly desire. As you fast this Lent, take time to examine what’s going on inside you. In your fast, confront the desires that lead you away from God—those that hurt you and others. Remember, fasting isn't about losing something, but about pruning what keeps you from drawing closer to divine intimacy. In today’s world, where distractions and pressures are ever-present, it’s important to recognize how these can pull us away from a genuine relationship with the Lord.

Consider reflecting on which of the seven deadly sins (Pride, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, and Envy) might be causing separation from God’s closeness in your life.

Some ways you can fast this Lent:

  • From the need for perfection and control

  • From unchaste thoughts, words, and actions

  • From overindulgence or the extra helping at dinner

  • From desiring what you don’t have or comparing yourself to others

  • From neglecting relationships with your spouse, friends, or even yourself

  • From giving in to road rage and impatience

  • From excessive use of social media and technology

Through fasting, you’re making room for God’s presence and growing in the freedom to love more fully.

Almsgiving

At the heart of Christianity is the call to charity—an outward expression of Christian love. Almsgiving goes beyond just giving money; it’s a tangible way to extend and reflect the love that Jesus has shown us. It is about willing the good of others, not just in material ways, but through prayer, fasting, and loving care for those in need. By giving to those who suffer, especially the poor, we enter into a shared spiritual communion, uniting us in our common humanity. As Christians, we live out this call through the corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead.

Consider these acts of almsgiving:
