Letter From the Pastor

Dear St. Ann Parish Family,

Dear St. Ann Parish Family,

As we come together for our annual stewardship weekend, I want to express my deep gratitude for the incredible journey we've shared.

Looking back on the past year, which we dedicated to building our sense of community, we've witnessed a remarkable unity among us. Over 30% of our St. Ann attendees have found belonging in more than 140 vibrant community groups, which is truly inspiring.

Now, as we enter the "Year of Evangelization," based on Matthew 28:19's call to spread the good news, our mission is clear: we aim to empower everyone at St. Ann's to discover and share their unique faith stories. This vision-driven year unfolds in three ways:

First, through the Transcend campaign, we're creating an environment that reflects God's beauty and guides all who come to us toward Christ's radiant presence.

Second, we're investing in the Missionary Institute, equipping young adults, especially those passionate about youth ministry, to inspire the faith of today's youth.

Lastly, we're integrating evangelization into our parish life, fostering a culture that actively spreads the Gospel.

Our annual stewardship weekend's gospel reading from Matthew 22:34-40 reminds us of Christ's teaching to love God and our neighbor. Stewardship rooted in love permeates every aspect of our lives. As we align our priorities with God's will, we become living examples of His teachings, drawing others closer to the Gospel. Stewardship becomes a powerful means of evangelization.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for your generosity, your active involvement in our parish family, and, above all, your prayers. Your contributions allow us to continue the vital work for God's kingdom. May God bless you abundantly.

With deep appreciation for your faith and support,

Very Rev. Edwin Leonard, Pastor

Parish Pastoral Council

The Holy Spirit continues to move in big ways to bring our parish together and lead us toward our vision. As always, the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) works in an advisory role to our pastor, developing, measuring, and refining the parish strategic plan. This past fiscal year brought the PPC together and directed our strategic planning in new ways.

A New View

Gaining a new pastor provided a great opportunity to evaluate and adjust the strategic plan to keep it aligned with our parish vision and how Fr. Edwin approaches that vision.

Intentional discipleship remained as our strategic focus for the year, specifically what it means to be a disciple at St. Ann. This effort involved helping parishioners understand the key elements of being a parishioner, welcoming new parishioners in an intentional way, and laying the foundation for how we walk with the Lord and one another.

The success of any strategic initiative always depends on the work of our amazing St. Ann staff and volunteers. This year’s efforts took shape in a few different ways.

Discipleship at St. Ann — creating a culture of discipleship in which each St. Ann parishioner intentionally worships, gives, serves, and grows in community here, explaining what that means through homilies and parish communications, and highlighting opportunities in each area.

Welcome+ — providing monthly gatherings for new parishioners and those considering joining our parish to experience abundant hospitality, get connected with new and existing members, and learn what it means to be a parishioner at St. Ann.

Walking together — developing a clear understanding of what it means to be “in community” at St. Ann, adding a staff position specifically to curate and cultivate the growth of small groups.

Looking Ahead

St. Ann continues to thrive! The coming year will focus on building community by leveraging the structures already in place. Each staff member, volunteer, and parishioner contributes to the St. Ann community, and each will be called to build that community in different but specific ways.

Key initiatives for the current fiscal year include:

  • Fully engage parishioners in intentional communities

  • Continue leadership building within & among community groups

  • Augment Welcome+ for an easy transition into parish life & the key elements of being a parishioner

Walking Together

We are so excited to see where the Holy Spirit will lead our parish! We pray that this coming year of building community helps all parishioners see clearly how Jesus works in their lives and makes it easier to share that experience with others.

We are blessed to serve at St. Ann through PPC, and we invite anyone who would like more information about PPC or the current strategic plan to contact us at pastoralcouncil@stannparish.org.

Collections & Expenses for 2023—2024

2023 Financial Update

What an incredible year it has been! The attendance at Mass continues to grow, and our strategic emphasis on community has brought our parish family closer than ever. We’ve witnessed the formation of new groups and ministries aimed at drawing more people in. Our Parish has initiated the Transcend Campaign, which aims to bring a Tabernacle into the main church along other enhancements. The campaign’s goal is to create an environment that transcends the ordinary, proclaims God’s beauty and goodness, and guides all who enter toward the radiant presence of Christ. We’ve also opened our doors to host events like Men’s Summit and the Encounter Conference. Looking ahead to the coming year, our focus will shift to Evangelization. We are inspired to share our spiritual journeys and how the Lord continues to work in our lives. The Holy Spirit is undoubtedly at work here at St. Ann!

Parish Financial Health

Once again, our external auditors found no exceptions with St. Ann’s annual accounting reports for the fiscal year 2022-23.

The parish concluded the 22-23 fiscal year with an operating surplus of almost $200K. Through your generosity, contributions exceeded the budget by over 4%. Your support allowed St. Ann to reach more parishioners and those seeking Christ with its expanded programs and services that focus on our strategic goals. Operating expenses came in 2% below budget. The primary reasons for the savings are headcount related. St. Ann, like so many organizations, has struggled to hire employees. This resulted in lower salary and benefits costs versus the budget.

One item that is not included in the Net Operating results is the gain/loss on the funds that St. Ann has invested with The Catholic Foundation. During this fiscal year we experienced a gain of near $175K, despite the volatility of the stock market and fears of inflation.

A Look Ahead

The budget for fiscal year 23-24 reflects an increase in collections of 4.6%. Your continued generosity to the parish and giving hearts make this a very reasonable target. There is an increase in expenses of just over 12% compared to the prior year. A large portion of the increase is a result of filling all open positions. The remainder of the increase reflects investments that will increase productivity and focus on the parish’s strategic goals.

The budget deficit is $300K. The Finance Council and the department Directors will continue to monitor the financial results, adjusting as needed, with a goal of reducing the deficit.

Growth and change are a big part of what make St. Ann the vibrant, welcoming parish it is today. We need your continued support to achieve the goals and success the Lord has in His plans for St. Ann.

You make a difference and we thank you for your generosity.

We ask that you prayerfully consider your contribution to St. Ann:

  • If you have given in the past, please consider increasing your support.

  • If you have not yet given, please consider pledging this year.

Adult Ministry

Looking back on this year, we are filled with awe at the incredible ways God has blessed our community. As we began to meet together again in-person, no one really knew what ministry would look like as they returned, it was and continues to be a new frontier. Our community was faithful, and faster than anyone thought possible, we are back and stronger than ever!

It feels like a new revival in the parish. Our parish mission stands out as a primary example to our department of the ways God called us out of our comfort zone and bore great fruit. We moved the parish mission to a weekend event for the entire family, and it was an overwhelming success! We are also excited by the growth of the pathway and formation of Christian Initiation, CRHP/CRSP, parish Bible Studies, and Alpha.

This year we are taking a strategic initiative to build up a deeper sense of Community. With such a large and active community, we have found that one of the best ways to build community and fight against anonymity is through joining a Community Group, which is a committed small group of individuals to grow in their faith, in fellowship, and in friendship. We pray for each of you every day in our staff prayer, and it is our greatest joy to serve each of you. May the peace of Christ continue to unite us all in His name.

Marly Castillo, Director of Adult Ministry

Children’s & Youth Ministry

In Children’s and Youth Ministry, we are currently discipling those who will be fearlessly leading our church in the future. That is why we made sure to welcome, love, encourage, and most importantly share the Gospel with every young person we encountered this past year! Some highlights from this past year include:

New Model for Children’s Ministry

We engaged our children in a new way this past year by changing the workbook curriculum we used in the past to a small group model that comes together as a large group to learn scripture, engage in games, songs, worship, and much more! This past year was a great success with increased numbers and opening a new time on Sundays after the 10am Mass, a popular option.

Youth Ministry

This past year saw many teens and families return to church since COVID. Two of the many highlights from this past year was HSM/ MSM retreats coming back and a full Mission trip to Laredo. This summer in Laredo was one of the hottest in recent years. One of my favorite stories from Laredo was before we left for the trip. One teen was struggling to find ways to raise money for the trip and his family didn’t have a lot of extra income to pay for the trip. But this teen wanted to go so bad that he made a deal with his parents. His parents had been wanting him to get a haircut since his hair was very long but this teen loved his long hair and was not going to cut it. That is until he brokered a deal. He made a deal with his mom that if he cut his hair his parents would help him pay for the rest of the trip. They agreed and this young man cut his and made his way to Laredo. This trip means that much to these teens. It shows teens the meaning of true service, it forms leaders in our youth, and it changes lives.

Joey Scancella, Director of Children & Youth Ministries

Liturgy & Music

At the heart of our parish community is the Eucharist and our sacramental life. With more than 1,300 liturgical events (Masses, Confessions, etc.), 12 different ministries, and over 1200 liturgical volunteers in English and Spanish, our clergy and staff rally to serve the church at prayer. Emerging from the pandemic those attending weekend Masses have risen steadily from 4000 to 7000 attending weekly!

In addition to those activities, we have had many beautiful prayer moments this year from the Opening of the Diocesan Synod, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Corpus Christi processions to the Women’s night of Worship. There is no doubt that Christ is at the center of our life here at St. Ann.

Curtis Stephan, Director of Liturgy and Music

Building Hope Capital Campaign

Thank you to those that pledged to the Building Hope Campaign and continue to faithfully pay down your pledges. We have been truly blessed to witness such fruits of our labor with the Campaign and there is so much more to be done in support. We have witnessed countless lives already being transformed in these spaces in just one year through programs such as Alpha, Sacramental Preparation classes, Bible Study programs, and more. Our nursery continues to serve children at Masses each weekend, and we have even opened up to serve ministries throughout the week as childcare is needed for parents that wish to attend programs in the evening and during the day. If you have not visited these spaces, please reach out to me and I will personally provide a tour of our new meeting and office spaces.

Thank you again to everyone who has given or pledged with such a charitable heart. If you missed the opportunity to be a part of this life-giving space with your pledge, there is still time. We need your help to continue such important work for the kingdom of God.

As you will see from our financials, we have a definitive need for additional Building Hope pledges to close the gap of $2,036,007. Help support the great work we have started together and leave a lasting legacy as a St. Ann Parishioner for generations to come.

To make a pledge or learn about remaining naming opportunities in the building spaces, email ralmanza@stannparish.org, or you can pledge directly online: stannparish.org/give.
