DALLAS - The Premier event of the year is behind us, but the excitement from the evening has yet to settle down! The 13th Annual Bishop's Gala for Catholic Charities of Dallas produced record-breaking numbers in all aspects of the evening. Raffle tickets sales, Underwriting efforts, attendance, as well as overall enthusiasm for this event were all record-breaking in number! Attendance surpassed all years prior with over 1,200 guests. The evening well exceeded the initial goal of $250,000, nearly doubling this amount with forecasted net revenue of $450,000! The live auction items were well received by the highly energized crowd with most tables remaining on their feet enjoying the excitement! Of those items, a few noteworthy for their high bidding were the Notre Dame Football Weekend Package selling for $12,000, an Ultimate Elk Hunt selling for $11,000, a Dinner in the Wild Package selling three times for $10,000 each, the Serenity in Skaneateles, New York trip sold two times for $7,500 each, Father Josef's Homemade Gingerbread House Experience sold two times for $8,000 each, and the highly sought after Mother Teresa Autographed Portrait sold a total of four times for $11,000 each! Also, congratulations to the winners of the Super Bowl XLV raffle prize - Deacon Jim and Diane Daniels!
Included in the line-up of amazing auction items was a surprise item for a live phone call from the headliner himself, Mr. Bill Cosby! This surprise opportunity sold for $5,000 to Mr. and Mrs. Dan Basso and was the start to Mr. Cosby's act following the auction. Alongside the surprise item were two exclusive sweatshirts autographed by Bill Cosby with his slogan of "Hello Friend" on the front accompanied by the Catholic Charities of Dallas logo. These collectible items sold for $1,000 and $750, providing a great gift for the winners to take home from the evening!
Adding to the night's excitement was an announcement about the "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" Endowment Campaign for Catholic Charities of Dallas. Endowment Campaign Chairs Kris and Matt Kramer along with Associate Director of Community Engagement and Philanthropy Jan Mitura, presented a check to Sr. Mary Anne Owens for $5 million raised by our generous Endowment campaign donors. This signifies the halfway mark in the Endowment campaign! In addition to the $5 million check, a surprise presentation of another check for $2.5 million was presented to Sr. Mary Anne Owens. The $2.5 million donation was a match by our anonymous Endowment Campaign donor whose pledge was to match one dollar for every two dollars raised! A special thank you was also given to Endowment Campaign Honorary Chairs, the Roger and Marianne Staubach Family, who were also in attendance.
The evening ended with an hour and a half of laughs as Bill Cosby entertained the crowd with his signature humor and comedic performance. Immediately after, Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Carroway along with Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Pauline Medrano called Bill Cosby back out on stage tohonor him with a Key to the City of Dallas Award for his Humanitarian Efforts. Mr. Cosby had joked when asked by the press the day before about being presented with this award saying he was upset he was being given the key to the City so late in the night -- because everything would be closed by then! The evening concluded with music and dancing to the Dallas Unlimited band with most guests staying until the late hours of 12 to 1 am!
