Age to Age: Generations of Faith
Steve Angrisano, Dan Schutte, and Curtis Stephan
In every age, the Church has called upon creative artists
to give new voice to praise and prayer.
God has continued to breathe forth his creative Spirit,
making noble the work of musicians' hearts and hands.
The forms of expression have been many and varied.
Sing to the Lord, paragraph #8
Curtis and Steve grew up singing Dan's music. From Glory and Praise to Our God
, to Hear I Am, Lord
, to Though the Mountains May Fall
, Dan's songs, deeply rooted in scripture and beautifully crafted musically, have accompanied Steve and Curtis through many significant moments of their Catholic life. "The first time I stood on a stage with Dan," said Steve, “I could hardly sing—I mean, here is the guy! Here is my hero!" "Dan writes the kind of music I want to write," Curtis said. "Every time I sing something like City of God
, I think how relevant and powerful it is, from the day it was written to today. When music is relevant, it's timeless. "
For his part, Dan has been a long time fan of Curtis and Steve's music. "I think Curtis' music is really special," Dan says, "His music skills and his experience as a music director really shows. He writes for the people. He may be young, but he has an old soul." Dan recalls that same conference when he and Steve sang together for the first time. "Here was a guy who really connects with people, and a man of deep faith," Dan said. "You can see in people's faces that Steve's music really touches them. He truly ministers to people."
Curtis, Dan, and Steve, formed by the Church at different seasons of her history, share something in common—the faith that has been passed down to them. Though their musical expressions might vary, their common baptism is the river that flows through their lives, giving heartbeat to the composer within. Dan, Curtis, and Steve are men of deep faith, humbled and grateful to be given the vocation of being musicians in God’s holy Church.
So, we gathered in Dallas, Texas at St. Ann Parish where Curtis services as Music Director. Quickly, naturally, easily, the idea of creating a concert event, one in which whole communities could come together to sing and to experience spiritual renewal, took shape. These composers discovered that they have a common approach to their ministry, and that they are united in their ideals as pastoral musicians.
It’s a simple idea. Three artists coming together to share their music with one another and with the Church. Leaving their categories of youth, liturgical, contemporary, behind, they instead will present a concert event of music and faith sharing that will reach across generations. Three powerful voices, one powerful faith.
Curtis, Dan, and Steve are putting finishing touches on a CD project that will become available soon.
