After the deacon hands the water cruet back to the server, the priest may use incense on the altar. If so:
a. The TH comes to the deacon with the thurible in the right hand and the incense boat in the left hand.
b. The TH hands the incense boat to the deacon and then lifts the lid of the thurible. The priest adds incense to the thurible and the TH lowers the lid. The deacon hands the incense boat back to the TH. The deacon hands the thurible to the priest, who than incenses the altar. Note: The priest should bless the thurible.
If a deacon is assisting the priest, the deacon will receive the thurible from the priest and then incense the congregation. The deacon will then hand the thurible to the TH.
If a deacon is not assisting, the priest will return the thurible to the TH, who will return it to its stand behind the sanctuary.
The CR and one candlebearer should get the water pitcher and lavabo bowl from the credence table. The server who will carry the bowl should first place the towel over his or her left arm. Together the servers pass under the arch and approach the altar from the left side. They will walk up the stairs to the left of the servers bench. (Note: These servers do not approach the altar until incensing of the altar is complete.) They should be standing close enough to the priest that he doesn't have to reach for the towel -- close to the corner of the altar is best. The altar server with the pitcher should be standing to the right of the other altar server.
