After communion, the priest may choose to clean the vessels that contained the Precious Body and Blood at the altar. While the servers might only encounter this with a visiting priest, they must know what to do if it occurs.
Therefore, if the priest chooses to clean the vessels at the altar:
C1 should take the water cruet to the altar and stand to the right of the priest. The handle of the cruet should face the priest.
C1 hands the cruet to the priest to pour water into the chalice.
When the priest is done, the priest will hand the cruet to the server who takes it back to the credence table.
After the purification, all servers should return to the altar in single file to receive, from the deacon, the sacramentals from the altar (e.g. the empty ciboria, the chalice and its accessories). Again, a slight bow is exchanged. The sacramentals should be returned to the credence table.
Notes: Carrying the chalice and its accessories is normally reserved for the CR.
Altar servers neither place nor remove vessels from the altar. The vessels should
always be handed to or received from the priest or deacon.
